10 Top Bible Verses to Pray Over Your Son

I have two sons whom I deeply love. I also have two brothers whom I love as well. My brothers have abandoned the faith they were taught as children, and for sure don’t want that for my sons. While I know that ultimately they will have to make their own choices, I also know that prayer is powerful! That’s why I want to share these Bible verses to pray over your son.

By praying Scripture, we are agreeing with God and what He says. We learn to value for our sons what God values. In turn, we then also will speak life over our sons and teach them these Scriptural values.

How do I Pray for my Boys?

Since prayer is you communicating with God, that’s what you need to do when praying for your boys. However, you will want to strive to be specific in your prayers versus a general “bless my son.” Prayer for your sons needs to be intentional as well. If you don’t make an effort toward praying in specific ways over your boys, it won’t happen.

What Should I Pray for my Son?

Maybe you’re wondering what you should be praying for your son. Perhaps you’ve been praying generally but are ready to get specific in your prayers. As I’ve already mentioned, by using Bible verses, you will be praying for what God desires as well.

Below I will share ten different things you can pray for your son with a Bible verse to go with each. You can also pray for your son’s protection, health, and strength.

1. To be a man of God

I would venture to say that if your son is a man of God, and loves Him above all others, then he will have a much easier time with the following things. He will then have the desire to live in a way that is pleasing to the Lord. Pray that your son will be a man of God.

‘I am about to go the way of all the earth. Be strong, and show yourself a man, and keep the charge of the Lord your God, walking in his ways and keeping his statutes, his commandments, his rules, and his testimonies, as it is written in the Law of Moses, that you may prosper in all that you do and wherever you turn,;” 1 Kings 2:2-3

2. To guard his heart

Since actions flow from your heart, it is important for our sons to guard their hearts. As moms, we are responsible for helping guard it when they are young, but then teaching them how to guard it as they get older. We won’t be able to make those choices for them forever, so we should pray this over them.

“Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life.” Proverbs 4:23

3. To watch his eyes

Have you ever seen something you can’t unsee? I know I have. With the age of first exposure to pornography often in the tweens, we need to be diligent in teaching our sons to guard against what he sees. The book, Good Pictures, Bad Pictures is a great resource for this. Be praying for your son to be on guard to what he sees.

“I will not set before my eyes anything that is worthless. I hate the work of those who fall away; it shall not cling to me.” Psalm 101:3

4. To choose his friends carefully

Friendships are important in the lives of our sons, but it is equally important that their close friendships are with others with the same beliefs. We become like those we choose to spend time with, so teach your sons to be careful in choosing friendships. As moms, we need to also be on the lookout for friends who are pulling our child away from Christ. Pray that God will bless him with godly friends.

“Whoever walks with the wise becomes wise, but the companion of fools will suffer harm.” Proverbs 13:20

5. To trust God in everything

Sometimes it’s hard for us as adults to trust God in everything, so we should definitely be praying this for our children as well as ourselves. Sometimes this can be hard when the circumstances don’t make sense to us or are hurtful. However, we know that God can use those hard times to grow us in our faith.

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.” Proverbs 3:5-6

6. For wisdom

Children are not known for their wisdom. In fact, the prefrontal cortex, responsible for impulse control, stopping certain behaviors, and thinking through decisions, is often not developed fully until 25 years of age! Yes, kids do dumb things and make decisions that aren’t smart. It’s imperative that we be praying for our sons to have wisdom to make good decisions based on what they know is right.

“A fool gives full vent to his spirit, but a wise man quietly holds it back.” Proverbs 29:11

7. To be a man of integrity

We look up to people of integrity, and integrity is a great thing to be praying over our sons. Teach them to be faithful in the little things, even when no one sees.

“He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?” Micah 6:8

8. To find an excellent wife

Start praying now (if you haven’t already) for your son to find a godly wife. Be praying for her as well, even though you don’t know who she is. Yes, it’s possible that your son will remain single, but marriage is common and important in the eyes of God. Let’s be praying!

“An excellent wife who can find? She is far more precious than jewels. The heart of her husband trusts in her, and he will have no lack of gain. She does him good, and not harm, all the days of her life.” Proverbs 31:10-12

9. To be a godly husband

Hopefully your son has a godly father who is modeling what it means to be a godly husband. However, even if he doesn’t, you can teach him what God says about a godly husband. Teach him to love and serve others in preparation for loving his wife someday. Teach him to treat you with kindness and respect. Pray that he will grow those characteristics while young.

“Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her, that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word,” Ephesians 5:25-26

10. To be a good father

God is the ultimate father and has instructions in His Word for what it means to be a good father. Talk about these with your son and pray them for him. If he has a good father, that will be all the better, but a child can become a godly father, even if it wasn’t modeled to him.

“Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.” Ephesians 6:4

Short Prayer for my Son

While you can use as many of the above topics and Bible verses as you want to pray for your son, sometimes it’s helpful to have a short prayer to pray for your son. I’ve given you and example prayer below, but definitely personalize your own prayers for your son. I’m praying that our sons will be godly leaders for the next generation. Will you join me?

“Dear Heavenly Father, You know what this world is like, but I know you chose my son to be a godly leader in this world. Please help him to be a man of God, full of integrity. Guard his heart and his eyes. Give him wisdom to know the right thing to do along with the strength to carry it out. I trust You with him. In the name of Jesus I pray, Amen.”
