Biblical Motherhood: What Does the Bible Say?

Biblical motherhood wasn’t a term I really heard growing up, even though I grew up in a Christian family. To save you the confusion, I’d love to share what biblical motherhood is, some biblical motherhood verses, and what God’s purpose for motherhood is. In the day-to-day tasks of the motherhood journey, it’s easy to forget the importance of what you are doing. For a few minutes, set aside your to-do list, and focus on what God has for you in this season.

As a Christian, I knew raising children should be done by following the ways of God’s Word, even before I had any. I had many ideas of what motherhood would look like, but as you and I both know, motherhood isn’t often what we pictured! The daily tasks of motherhood, things such as feeding, changing, and protecting your little ones, keep you busy enough. Add on the hard work of caring for your home, shopping, cooking, doctor’s appointments, and more, and you wonder how you’ll ever have time to be the loving and fun mom you always pictured. Then, you remember that you are to be teaching your children about God. I mean, that’s what a good Christian mom does, right? Let me share more about that.

Biblical Motherhood

The best way to learn God’s design for biblical motherhood is to see what the Word of God has to say about it. After all, motherhood was God’s idea. Maybe you had a great example of a godly mother’s teaching growing up, or perhaps this is all new for you. Either way, I’d love to remind you of the very important role that you play.

Biblical definition of motherhood

In the Bibele, we see that someone who is a mother is one who brings life. In Genesis 3:20, Adam named his wife Eve because she was the mother of all living. She was the first mother.

So, what is biblical motherhood? As you’ll get to see from the following Bible verses, biblical motherhood is someone who brings forth life. This call of motherhood does not have to be to her biological children but can be toward adopted children or even just a mother figure in a child’s life.

A biblical mother is someone who is serious about the roles of a godly mother as laid out in Scripture. She teaches her children about God, cares for, nurtures, comforts, and encourages them. She is kind, helps her husband, and puts God first in her life.

Biblical motherhood verses

Christian motherhood is based on the Word of God. I’d like to share a sampling of Bible verses to show you what Christian moms should be prioritizing. God’s plan for mothers is for them to glorify Him in how they pass down His truths to the next generation. This is something that is so needed in the world today.

2 Timothy 1:5

I am reminded of your sincere faith, a faith that dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice and now, I am sure, dwells in you as well.”

I love this verse because it reminds mothers of how important it is to teach our children about Jesus. This verse especially shows the impact of a godly mother throughout generations. In God’s wisdom, He leads us to pass down our faith to our children and our children’s children. This is huge in carrying the faith forward!

Proverbs 31:25-29

“Strength and dignity are her clothing, and she laughs at the time to come. She opens her mouth with wisdom, and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue. She looks well to the ways of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness. Her children rise up and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her: ‘Many women have done excellently, but you surpass them all.'” Proverbs 31:25-29

Godly mothers are instrumental in their child’s life. A spiritual mama will  be honored and blessed in time by her children. As they teach and train their children about the things of God and the gospel of Jesus, by the grace of God, those teachings will guide them throughout their whole lives.

Proverbs 6:20-21

“My son, keep your father’s commandment, and forsake not your mother’s teaching. Bind them on your heart always; tie them around your neck. When you walk, they will lead you; when you lie down, they will watch over you; and when you awake, they will talk with you.” Proverbs 6:20-21

A good mother will lead and guide her children to do the right thing, so her teaching needs to be the truth of God. She can’t do this in her own power. A biblical mom plays such an important role in her children’s lives.

Titus 2:3-5

“Older women likewise are to be reverent in behavior, not slanderers or slaves to much wine. They are to teach what is good, and so train the young women to love their husbands and children, to be self-controlled, pure, working at home, kind, and submissive to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be reviled.” Titus 2:3-5

This particular Scripture is full of mothers’ responsibilities. Basically, we are to love our husbands and children. We need to control ourselves, take care of our home, be kind, as well as submit to our husbands. Woo! I know that’s a lot, but thankfully we have God’s help with this important work. If you are an older woman, it’s time to pass this down to the younger women in your life.

Proverbs 14:1

“The wisest of women builds her house, but folly with her own hands tears it down.” Proverbs 14:1

I know that you realize the power of words. However, your actions also play a big role in the overall feel of your home. By carefully choosing your words carefully, make sure you are being a wise woman by building versus tearing down your home as this Old Testament verse reminds us.

1 Thessalonians 2:7

“But we were gentle among you, like a nursing mother taking care of her own children.” 1 Thessalonians 2:7

According to this verse, a biblical mother is to be gentle and caring, which is exactly what our children need. As Christian moms, we have a crucial role in this care, not only of their physical needs but also of their spiritual needs.

God’s Purpose for Motherhood

Often we have unrealistic expectations of what motherhood will be like. However, God is just looking for faithful mothers to answer the call to raise the next generation in a godly way. With the the help of God’s grace and the Holy Spirit, we are equiipped to share the good news of Jesus to our children.

It doesn’t matter if your own mother was a good example or not. Jesus Christ has made a difference in your life, and you can now point your children to Him. God’s purpose for motherhood is to teach and train your children to love God and love those around them. Are you doing it?
