It’s not easy to set your mind on things above when you’re constantly faced with challenges and distractions in your everyday life here on earth. Your children need your attention almost constantly. There are so many things to do and errands to run. I know you can relate!
However, if you want to find true peace and lasting happiness, it’s important that you learn how to set your minds on things above, even in the midst of everyday life in this world. I’m super excited to share with you some ways that you can train your mind to focus on the things that matter most . . . the things that are eternal. We’ll also explore some Bible verses that provide encouragement for setting our minds on such things so we can get God’s perspective on it.
Set Your Mind on Things Above Meaning
So, what does it mean to set your mind on things above? If you’ve been in Christian circles for long, I’m sure you’ve heard the phrase. Basically, it means that you should focus y,our thoughts on God and His heavenly kingdom rather than on earthly things. When your mind is set on the things of God, you’re better able to handle the trials and temptations of life. You can say no to ungodly things because you know that there’s something more important both in the here and now and waiting for you in heaven.
Will there be distractions to try to keep you focused on things of this world? Most definitely! Keeping your mind focused on heavenly things instead of worldly things is a battle, but it’s one worth fighting. Let’s check out some Bible verses dealing with our minds to help us in this battle. With God’s help, you can overcome the desire to focus on this present world and instead focus on what matters in the kingdom of God.
Set Your Mind on Things Above Verse
If you’re looking for a Scripture about setting your mind on things above, the most common one that comes to mind is Paul’s exhortation in Colossians 3:2 (ESV), which says, ” Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth.” While the whole book of Colossians is amazing, this verse specifically is an excellent piece of advice reminding us that we should be focused on the future and what God has in store for us. When we keep our minds set on things above, it’s one of the best ways to stay positive and hopeful even when life gets tough.
However, this is not the only Bible verse dealing with our minds. In fact, there are many other Bible verses about setting our minds on things above, but this one is a good starting point for understanding why it’s so important. As Christians, we know that this world is temporary and that our true home is in heaven with God. So let’s focus on the things that matter most to God and set our minds on things above!
Now I’d love to share some other Bible verses that remind us to be focused on the things of heaven and not on the here and now. I’d recommend writing one or more of these verses on a card and putting it where you will see it often. We all need this reminder!
“For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit. For to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace.” Romans 8:5-6
The Word of God tells you exactly how to take care of your thought life. This Bible verse reminds you that you can’t live according to the spirit if your mind is set on worldly lusts. As a follower of Jesus, you are a new creation! The good news is that you now have the Holy Spirit to help with the renewing of your mind. Did you notice what you get when your mind is set on the Spirit? You get life and perfect peace!
“Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus,” Philippians 2:5
Mama, this mind is yours in Jesus! There is no more trying to change in your own strength. No, you get real change that comes in Christ.
“Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.” Philippians 4:8
If you want a new mindset, this verse tells you exactly what kind of things to focus your mind on. As you set your mind on these things, the renewal of your mind takes place and the peace of God will reign. The things of the world will strangely lose their hold on you as you are able to focus more and more on eternal things. This heavenly mindset is just what you need as you continue to pour into your family.
How to Set Your Mind on Things Above
Yes, it sounds all good to set our minds on things above, but how do we do that in the busyness of motherhood? You’re being pulled in so many directions and it’s hard to focus on anything besides the chaos around you. If you can keep your mind focused on heavenly things, it will give you purpose in the chaos. By focusing your mind, you also help keep out the doubts and lies that Satan tries to place there. Here are some great ways that you can start setting your mind on things above:
As moms, unless we prioritize our relationship with God, it can easily fall by the wayside. Learn more about growing closer to God. As we grow closer to Him, we become a better wife and mother as well.
- Pray regularly. When you pray, you’re reminded of God’s presence in your life and His power to help you through whatever challenges you’re facing. If you want to set your mind on things above, make time for regular prayer.
- Read the Bible. The Bible is full of encouraging stories and verses that remind us of God’s love for us as well as His plan for us. By spending time in God’s Word, you’ll be better able to set your mind on things above. In your Bible reading, try to focus especially on verses that speak of God’s plan for you.
- Spend time with other believers. Surrounding yourself with other believers helps you to stay focused on God and His plan for your life. When you’re around like-minded people, it’s easier to set your mind on things above and focused on our earthly mission. Do you have a Christian mom community?
- Make a conscious effort to think about God throughout the day. Every time you catch yourself thinking about something earthly, redirect your thoughts to God and His goodness. Give thanks to Him. Over time, this will become easier and more natural. Use verse cards to help as mentioned above.
- Fill your mind with positive and good thoughts. When our minds are full of positive thoughts, it’s easier to set our minds on things above. A great way to do that is to fill your mind with good things by listening to uplifting Christian music, listening to Christian podcasts, reading inspiring books, and watching motivating movies. All these things can help renew your mind.
