5 Essential Prayers for the Home

I really love being at home. Maybe it’s the introvert in me, but it’s definitely my comfortable space. I dream of a space with a tidy and peaceful atmosphere, but with six kiddos running around, it’s usually not that! However, prayer can bring God’s peace and power to the home, even in the midst of the chaos. That’s why we’re talking about the importance of prayers for the home.

What does the Bible say about Praying over your Home?

Even back in the Old Testament times, it was common to say a blessing over a home that you visited.

“And thus you shall greet him: ‘Peace be to you, and peace be to your house, and peace be to all that you have.'” 1 Samuel 25:6 ESV

The Psalmist reminds us in Psalm 127:1 that we are laboring in vain if it’s not the Lord building our house, and Proverbs 3:33 tells us that it is the house of the righteous that is rewarded. Even in Jesus’ time, it was common to bless or pray over a home and its people. Why not incorporate prayer over our homes as well?

“Whatever house you enter, first say, ‘Peace be to this house!’ And if a son of peace is there, your peace will rest upon him. But if not, it will return to you.” Luke 10:5-6

How do you Pray over your Home?

There is no set way to pray over your home. You may choose to walk through your house room by room and pray for the people who occupy each room, what activities happen there, for protection and blessing, and for peace. However, you may also choose to stay in one place and pray over your home and it’s occupants in general. There may be a time for one versus the other, depending on what’s going on in your family at a particular time. Ask God for wisdom and He will give it to you.

Prayers for the Home

As I’ve mentioned, there are no set words to say or perfect way to do things. However, praying with Scripture is powerful, and I encourage you to use it often when you can. Below are some ideas of things you can be praying over your home and your family.

Prayers for home protection

Prayers for the protection of your home and family can encompass both physical safety and protection from evil and its influences. If you see something that is contributing to evil influences in your home, get rid of it. We want our home, our activities, and our things to be honoring to God.

Praying for physical safety

We are ultimately under God’s control, and we are safest wherever He has called us to be. As stay-at-home moms, that’s in our home much of the time. Pray that God would keep you and your family safe. Pray against accidents and sickness. God is our refuge and we can fully trust in Him and His ways.

“He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say to the Lord, ‘My refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.'” Psalm 91:1-2

“In peace I will both lie down and sleep; for you alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety.” Psalm 4:8

Prayer to protect home from evil

Evil is something we will constantly have to deal with because of our sinful nature. 1 Peter 5:8 reminds us that Satan is like a lion on the prowl. If that wasn’t enough, our own prideful flesh gets us into trouble all the time on its own! Here are some Scriptures to pray for protection from evil.

“Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.” Ephesians 6:11-12

“Abstain from every form of evil.” 1 Thessalonians 5:22

“But the Lord is faithful. He will establish you and guard you against the evil one.” 2 Thessalonians 3:3

“Lord, I pray that you keep my family and my home safe as only You can. You are our refuge and fortress, and we trust in You. Because of You, we can sleep in peace. Guard us against the evil one, and help us to abstain from all kinds of evil. We put on the armor of God to protect us. In Jesus name, Amen.”

Prayer for house blessing in the home

Prayers for the home will definitely include blessing over your home. Consecrate it to God and allow Him free reign over your home and family. As God shows His love to you, look for ways you can extend that love to those around you through your home. Be hospitable. Let others see God at work in your home. Pray for all who enter.

“And if it is evil in your eyes to serve the Lord, choose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your fathers served in the region beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” Joshua 24:15

“Contribute to the needs of the saints and seek to show hospitality.” Romans 12:13

“Blessed shall you be when you come in, and blessed shall you be when you go out.” Deuteronomy 28:6

“Lord, everything I have is Yours, including this home. Help us to use it for Your purposes by showing hospitality to those in our lives. Bless those who walk through our door. I, along with my family, choose to serve You. Amen.”

Prayers for peace in the home

We all want a peaceful environment. I mean, there’s just something soothing and relaxing about it. However, did you realize that God wants a peaceful home for us as well as a mind that is at peace? Check out the last verse. It’s God’s peace that will guard our heart and mind. I love that! Let’s pray for peace to reign in our homes.

“The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you; the Lord lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace.” Numbers 6:24-26

“My people will abide in a peaceful habitation, in secure dwellings, and in quiet resting places.” Isaiah 32:18

“And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:7

“Lord, bless us and keep us. Let Your face shine upon us and give us peace. Fill our home with a peace that can be felt by all who enter. Guard even our hearts and minds with Your peace, even when the storms of life blow. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”

Prayers for provision in your home

We really need God to provide for us in so many ways. For example, we need physical provision and spiritual provision, especially for God’s wisdom as we navigate the day-to-day.

Prayers for physical provision

I love the verses below, and they are great Scriptures to pray over our homes for physical provision. God is watching out for us and knows our every need. He promises to take care of those who follow Him, so we don’t need to worry. We just need to trust.

“Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life? And why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all.” Matthew 6:25-32

“And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:19

Praying for the provision of wisdom

We also need to pray for wisdom, God’s wisdom, to build our homes. Did you realize our homes are built by wisdom? I love James 1:5, which reminds us that if we lack wisdom, we just need to ask for it. I need God’s wisdom all the time and ask Him for it constantly!

“By wisdom a house is built, and by understanding it is established; by knowledge the rooms are filled with all precious and pleasant riches.” Proverbs 24:3-4

“Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock. And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it.” Matthew 7:24-27

“The wisest of women builds her house, but folly with her own hands tears it down.” Proverbs 14:1

“Lord, Thank you for supplying all our needs in Christ Jesus. Please help us to trust You and not worry. I also ask that our home be built on Your wisdom and not be torn down by foolishness. You have promised wisdom if we only ask for it. Let our home be built on the rock that is You. Amen.”

Prayers for family unity in the home

As families who are following after God, we need to build unity in our homes. By displaying unity, we are showing the love of God. Our family relationships need to be restored and kept strong in difficult times. Prayers for the home will definitely include unity within the family.

Praying for family restoration

Family restoration involves forgiving one another, supporting and encouraging each other’s burdens, being patient with one another, and just being kind. Love is what binds us all together in perfect harmony. However, sometimes we find it hardest to show love to those we love and know best. Our family sees our best . . . and our worst! Let’s forgive one another as Jesus has forgiven us. There are so many Bible verses to pray over our family for unity!

“bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive.  And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony.” Colossians 3:13-14

“with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.” Ephesians 4:2-3

“Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.” Ephesians 4:32

“Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor.” Romans 12:10

“If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.” Romans 12:18

Prayers for my family in difficult times

Life here in a fallen world, unfortunately, comes with difficulty at times. However, even in those times, we can have hope. Our hope is in our God! We don’t need to fear or be overcome by our trials. God continues to work in and through them. He is with us every step of the way, so allow your trials to bring you and your family closer to each other and to God.

“We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed;” 2 Corinthians 4:8-9

“Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.” James 1:2-4

“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” Joshua 1:9

Lord, we pray for unity in our family. Help us to be humble and patient with one another. May we forgive to the extent that You have forgiven us. May we outdo one another in showing honor. Let peace reign in our relationships, even in times of trial. Thank you that because of You, we are not crushed, driven to despair, or destroyed; but instead, we can find joy, steadfastness, courage, and strength. I thank you that You are with us through it all. Help us to be more and more like You. In Jesus name, Amen.”

Have you prayed over your home before? What do your home and family need right now? My prayer is that this got you thinking about the importance of praying over your home, and especially incorporating Scripture into your prayers. May God use your family and your home mightily for His purposes.
